In total, 11 container vessels are currently handling operations.

Berth Congestion & Yard Capacity

As of August 26, 2025, container yard density remained elevated at 88%, while vessel berthing delays had improved:

  • Geared vessels: 0–2 days delay
  • Gearless vessels: 3–6 days delay

To reduce congestion, the port authority initiated “force loading” of empty containers onto feeder vessels, though this has strained the availability of 40STD/HC import empties used for exports.

Strategic Developments & Future Planning

  • Foreign Terminal Management Coming Soon:
By December 31, 2025, foreign operators are set to take over major terminals:
    • DP World (UAE) at NCT
    • APM Terminals (Netherlands) at Laldia Char
    • DP World and PSA International (Singapore) for Bay Terminals
  • New Mooring Terminal Performance:
Managed temporarily by Chittagong Dry Dock Ltd, this terminal saw a 30% increase in container handling and a 13% reduction in unloading time in the first month under their control.

Summary: Overall Status of Chittagong Port

  • Active Operations: Multiple vessels are currently berthed or scheduled, handling both import and export loads.
  • Moderate Congestion: Yard capacity remains high (~88%); delays persist but are improving.
  • Strategic Improvement Underway: Steps like force loading, upgrading terminals, and handing over operations to professional foreign firms aim to boost efficiency.
  • Positive Momentum: Early results at the New Mooring Terminal show promising gains in throughput and speed.
